The Best Garage Adjustable Wall Shelves

Best Garage Adjustable Wall ShelvesMostly my preference for garage shelves is for them to be solid, deep and to hold as much weight as possible. But there are times when a durable, adjustable shelf is just what you need.

If you’re in the market for a set of adjustable shelving for your garage, or anywhere you need some sturdy shelving, the Fleximounts 3-Tier Storage Wall Shelves has you covered. Click here to get them on Amazon. Fleximounts has a track record of making quality products and these shelve are no exception. Here are a few of the reasons I am a Fleximounts fan:

Strong and durable

They are engineered to a high standard using heavy gauge steel. Each part is rigorously tested. Even the mounting screws and other included hardware is nice and solid (twice as thick as some of the competition’s).

Well designed

These shelves have a patented adjustment system made so that one person can easily change the shelves’ location. I know I have struggled in the past with bad designed products so these shelves were a breath of fresh air.

Easy to install

There is an included template that you can use to mark the spots for the screws. The hole guides are 14”, 16” and 24” apart to accommodate different stud spacing. You can also install the shelves into concrete walls if you have them. The template has a build in bubble level to make sure you are getting level shelves! I wish more companies thought this way.

Build for heavy duty storage

Fleximount makes the best garage shelves

These shelves hold 100 pounds each and are designed to be attached to wall studs or concrete. One thing you will not find included in the box are sheetrock anchors. If you buy shelves and they include sheetrock anchors, know that those shelves are meant for toilet paper and wash cloths and not paint cans and tool boxes.

Good dimensions

Shelves are 12” deep by 48” long and are 35.7” tall. I find that large enough to be useful yet still able to fit into a smaller area. Something like a Spackle bucket or heavy took box will easily fit onto one of the shelves and since they can hold 100 pounds per shelf it should provide a good solid storage solution for some of your heavier non-bulky items.

Other Options

You have two choices when you need adjustable shelving, you can get a single set of adjustable shelves such as the Fleximount system or you can go with a whole wall system such as Gladiator or Wall Control. Wall systems will offer different accessories in addition to shelves.

If you have already made an investment in a wall system such as the ones I mentioned above then by all means look into their shelving solutions. From what I have seen however they generally don’t have the load capacity of a stand alone system such as Fleximounts’.

Value for the Money

I find Fleximounts to be the best solution for the money when it comes to adjustable garage shelves. There are certainly brands that cost over twice the amount and don’t give you that much more. Most of the cheaper shelves are designed for closets or laundry rooms and as such do not have the load bearing capacity that you might need in a garage. The Fleximounts 3-Tier adjustable shelving system can hold 100 pounds per shelf and at 12” deep is small enough to fit into a tight space yet big enough to hold a 5 gallon spackle bucket.

There are many adjustable shelving units to choose from, almost all of which are made of wire. I generally dislike wire shelves because the uneven surface can be annoying and the openings allow small objects to fall through. But there are times when wire can be a benefit. The shelves themselves are light and easy to maneuver making it easier to adjust them. Hanging hooks, wires and even zip-ties lets you simply attach something quickly without drilling holes. Also electronic devices will get sufficient air flow when on wire shelving, preventing them from over-heating.

Here’s a cool little hack for stabilizing electronics that have little rubber feet when putting them on wire shelves. Use a couple clean paint stirrers across each pair of feet to make a flat surface without blocking the airflow provided by the wire mesh.

What to Look for in an Adjustable Garage Shelf

In all honesty there are very few wall mounted adjustable shelves that are suitable for garages. There are a number of fixed shelves for garages, (Rhino Shelf being my top pick) and many adjustable shelves for closets, baths and laundry rooms. The Fleximounts 3-Tier Storage Wall Shelves are pretty much the only game in town worth looking at. It made me wonder why there is so little competition.

The main reason for this, I think, is that creating an adjustable shelf that attaches to a wall is challenging. Not only do you have to use strong high quality materials but you have to engineer things in a way that is easy to use. I think Fleximounts rose to the occasion.

In order to hold any significant weight the wall unit needs to be mounted to the wall studs or into concrete. Even though there are building codes dictating the proper distance between studs there is never a guarantee that every garage owners studs are up to standard. Shelves still need to be mounted into studs regardless of building standards. In order to accomplish this the shelf and the arms that hold it up need to be separate pieces. These pieces need to be easy to assemble and disassemble and really strong once they are together. Fleximounts did a really great job with their patented solution.

Cheaper shelves can droop away from the wall. This happens because there is play between the mounting arm and the vertical beam or between the shelf and the arm. Fleximounts’ shelves don’t droop. The connection between the shelf, the arm and the vertical wall mount is tight and does not wiggle. Yet the connections are easy to disassemble for easy adjustment.

You get what you pay for

It may sound obvious but many people for get this when shopping for something. A quality product is more expensive to make than a cheap one. This is far from a genius level observation. And buying something cheap and then replacing it is a false economy. This does not however mean you need to buy the most expensive thing there is and the Fleximount shelving is certainly not the most expensive.
